TOPOGRAPHY
The historic design concepts of the Shari (Open Street), Zaroub (Side Street, space to bump shoulders), and Zanka (Communal Courtyard) were investigated and expanded upon to preserve a human-centric history in the ever-evolving Beirut area, while installing temporary shelter and separation for future refugee generations. This new urban language transforms the structured nature of Bourj Hammoud, allowing for personal spaces to occur both along the street and vertically. As this language transforms moving towards the waterway, large open spaces allow for a metaphorical and literal breath deep inside the constructed city. This provides much needed public space in a means that allows the environment to naturally thrive, and an urban area that is truly equitable.
